The Bahamas - Horse Carriage Rides

Horse carriage rides in The Bahamas are fun, but risky, because sometimes the horses stop in the middle of the street. The actual ride is a bit bumpy, which may be uncomfortable due to the lack of shock absorbers

You can travel around The Bahamas in many ways, but many people do not consider horse carriage rides. Horse carriage rides are unique and fun to try, but tourists generally prefer to take bus tours instead. During a carriage ride, you get to see the island in a different way, which happens somewhat slowly, which is great, but there are risks involved. A horse carriage ride is worth a try, but you need to consider a few things before booking it.

The horse carriages are not hard to find, there are some in Nassau behind the welcome center. If you want to book a ride, the moment you get off the cruise ship is a great time to do it, because the ship unloads in that area. The carriage ride will not take up all your time in Nassau on your first day; the tour only lasts about 20 minutes.

During the ride, the tour guide takes you around the town and down the sides of the streets to show you some of the areas in Nassau. The tour guide does not go any farther that this because there is a hilly area beyond the determined path, and the horses cannot walk up a steep hill. You should also know that the ride is quite noisy; you will hear the horses make sounds while their feet hit the ground consistently.

Because of the noise, the tour guide does not talk much, so do not expect an in-depth speech about the sites you see during the carriage ride, the tour guide only leads the horses around and that is it. If you are planning a romantic ride, it will not be what you though, because the sounds will be very loud, which prevents you from talking and saying anything without repeating it.

The ride itself feels like a buggy ride, with no shock absorbers, so this is not a good ride for people with bad backs or joints. When you hit a bump, nothing absorbs it, so you will feel every stump and bump as you ride through Nassau. After the tour is over, the driver drops you off in front of the pirate museum.

There are a few risks as well, mainly dealing with aggressive drivers who are impatience when they see a horse carriage crossing in the street. Many car drivers will not even try to slow down when they see a carriage moving across the street, until the last second; the drivers must think the horses will speed up when they see a car heading their way. This can be quite scary, because you never know what is going to happen when a car is speeding your way.

Other than speeding cars, sometimes the horses get confused and end up stopping in the middle of the street, which is also dangerous. When this happens, car drivers will get angry and say things out their windows, which really ruin a great trip.

Horse carriage rides are fun, but sometimes they are risky and dangerous depending on the drivers on the streets and the horses’ behavior

Easy access to The Bahamas is one reason for its long-standing popularity as a winter holiday destination. Only a few miles from the south Florida coast, in fact closer than Caribbean destinations, the islands can be reached quickly either by air or by sea.

The Bahama Islands temperatures rarely drop below 60 degrees F, or rise above 90 degrees F. Most of the rain fall occurs in the summer months. The sea temperature ranges from the low 80's in the summer to about 74 degrees F in the winter
